The Davey Tree Expert Company in Kent is now the 12th largest employee-owned company in the United States — moving up one spot from 2017 — according to the National Center for Employee Ownership.
Davey, which employs more than 9,500 people, has been employee-owned since 1979.
Wooster-based Buehler’s Fresh Foods, which became an employee-owned company last year, was ranked 59th. Buehler’s employs 2,1000 people.
The two are the only Ohio-based companies ranked on the NCEO’s 2018 Employee Ownership 100 list, which includes the nation’s largest companies that are majority owned by an employee stock ownership plan or other broad-based employee ownership plan.
Florida-based Publix Super Markets, with 190,000 employees, is by far the largest employee-owned company in the country. Penmac, a Missouri-based staffing company, is No. 2 with 25,250 employees.
